Mike Serr, Abbotsford police chief, spoke with CIVL regarding the opioid crisis in the Fraser Valley and BC.

"At the time, when we saw those crises (drug and opioid crisis) and the devastation it was causing for families and individuals, and what we were doing wasn't really making a difference, we needed to look differently how we would focus [on the drug and opioid crises]," Chief Serr said.

"We need to support individuals and find them healthcare pathways," he added.

According to the federal government's website, 94 per cent of opioid overdose deaths happen by accident and young Canadians aged 15 to 24 are the fastest-growing population requiring hospital care from opioid overdoses.
