Following recent concerns about the growth of homelessness in the lower mainland, an Abbotsford shelter is defending the local unhoused community.

Ward Draper, executive director of 5 and 2, the local non-profit overnight shelter, spoke with CIVL about the community his organization serves and the challenges their clients face, hoping to raise awareness about the issues.

"We [5 and 2] have expanded services. We now offer a shelter for 24/7 a week for ages 55+," Draper said, noting that they organization expanded support during the pandemic.

In response to the community's concerns, Draper said the unhoused community needed more support and advocacy to help solve the homelessness crisis.

"The [homeless] situation has gotten worse in Abbotsford. Our programs and agencies are beyond capacity."
