Terrace’s senior men's AA hockey team the River Kings are holding a charity game for the first time this year.
The team will be playing against the Terrace Adult Hockey League (TAHL) men’s team on Saturday to fundraise for Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart program.
According to Germain Francouer, general manager for the River Kings, this may be the first time the team has held or participated in a charity game.
First playing as a team in the 2004/2005 season, the River Kings have won the Central Interior Hockey League Championships four times.
This game will see 18 players selected from across the 14 TAHL teams to go against the River Kings’ 25.
But the players aren’t only competing for charity: the winning team will also stake a claim over the Peter Nisyok Memorial Cup.
Francouer says that there will also be intermission activities, 50/50 draws, and door prizes per the usual River Kings games. The first intermission will see a few fans take to the ice to attempt to score a goal by rolling tires down the ice, courtesy of Canadian Tire of course. The second intermission will see attendees take part in a classic puck toss.
All proceeds from ticket sales and intermission activities will go towards the Jumpstart program. Francouer says that they are also hoping for a high scoring game; because for every goal made, one of the event's sponsors, MNP Accounting, will donate $100.
The teams will face off in the Terrace Sportsplex main arena on Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. Adult admission is $10 and kids 12 and younger are free of charge.
