Terrace Royal Canadian Legion Branch 13 is gearing up for a big weekend which includes one of its biggest fundraisers.

President of the Legion Agnes Taylor says that the Legion Bonspiel is an important annual fundraiser for the organization.

A portion of the money received in registration fees goes towards the dinner, breakfast, and prizes that are offered throughout the weekend, but,  after that, the Legion normally sees between $3,000-$5,000 raised, Taylor says.

This year will see 32 teams throwing curling stones down the ice. Taylor says is the highest turnout they’ve seen in a while. Traditionally held at the end of January, the bonspiel had one last run with 25 teams before COVID-19 restrictions were put in place in 2020. They made a return in 2022, but with just 16 teams.

Registration is open to any team, whether competitive or recreational.

Bonspiel events start on Friday, Jan. 27 at 6 p.m. with an opening ceremony from the Legion Colour Party, and curling commences shortly after at 7 pm. The tournament ends on Sunday, Jan. 29.

Along with the bonspiel, the Legion will also be hosting their meat draw and music bingo on Saturday.
