Cobourg Police recovered five bicycles on Tuesday that believed were stolen and are working to find the owners.

The bikes were together, but not in anyone's possession at the time and no charges were laid. Communications Coordinator Lisa Munday said reports of bike thefts are increasing in town. No specific numbers were available.

"We've seen an increase probably since August...so we really want to encourage everyone to take a moment to register their bikes - you can register your whole family at once," Munday said.

Police suggest residents use the service's online reporting system to register their bicycles after an increase in stolen bike reports. The online bicycle registration program helps increase the chance of having a bike returned to its owner if it is lost or stolen.

Anyone whose bike is lost or stolen and who has not completed a report should contact police at 905-372-6821 with a description to see if one of the recovered bikes is theirs.

Bike registration can be completed at cobourgpoliceservice.com/online-reporting/. Owners will need to provide information about the bike and ownership, including brand, make and model, serial number and the owner name and contact information. Photos can be included and households can add more than one bicycle at the same time to the report.
