The plan for this year's Orange Shirt Day has been unveiled by Six Nations Elected Council (SNEC).

At the general council meeting this week, Caitlin Court, communications coordinator for Six Nations Elected Council, presented the plans and logistics for events they plan on holding on Sept. 29 and Sept. 30.

Court detailed the plans for a drive-thru picnic pack giveaway that will be happening at Oneida Business Park starting at 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 29. Council will be giving out 800 of these picnic packs in the drive-thru event; these packs are limited to one pack per household.

Court also detailed the social media awareness campaign elected council will be running in conjunction with the Sept. 29 event. Council is hoping to see community members wearing orange and posting pictures with the hashtag “SNwearsorange” to share how they are raising awareness and remembering those lost from residential schools.

Members of elected council stressed the importance of including elders from the community in the event and are making sure they are well represented and the event is accessible for them.

Court and Chief Mark Hill spoke on this saying accommodations can be made for those unable to pick up their picnic basket by sending a family member and providing proof that they are picking the package up for the person without access to the event.

Hill also was able to detail that the downtown portion of Ohsweken will be getting a makeover for the day including orange ribbons being put up, and crosswalks being painted orange.

Many other organizations do have events planned for the day and SNEC say they will be including social media posts for those events as well.

Orange Shirt Day happens Sept. 30 on Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
