A Six Nations local will be the official torchbearer for the 2023 Ontario 55+ Summer Games.
Doris Henhawk, 86, said it was "very moving" to be chosen as torchbearer. Henhawk will officially begin the games Aug. 9 when she will be able to light the games cauldron to officially start the event. The three-day event will be taking place in the City of Brantford and the County of Brant.
"I didn't expect anything like that at all. I've been involved with the senior games for a long while but you just don't expect stuff like that to happen," Henhawk says about being recognized by the games. "I think the enormity hasn't really sunk in yet but it's getting there and I'm really excited about having to do this."
Henhawk, a former teacher, has been involved with the games for the past 20 years and has medaled in both the summer and winter Ontario Senior Games for golf and prediction skating, as well as winning the Gold Medal in the Canada Senior Games for golf. She spoke on being involved with the games and said the experience over the years has been a lot of fun.
"I've made a lot of new friends all across Ontario. I still keep in contact by email and such with some of the skaters and golfers so thats been really fun," she said. "Going and playing in other provinces and playing in the Canada Games was exciting but not as exciting as being the torchbearer for our games here in Brantford and Brant County."
The games will be hosted throughout 17 venues across the two locations, with the games taking place over a three day period from Aug. 9-11. The games will feature over 1,400 participants in 19 sports, including swimming, walking, pickleball, golf, euchre and many more.
