Six Nations is hosting a week of local gospel music for the first time this summer.

Six Nations Community Youth Outreach (SNCYO) have been granted permission to use a property owned by Six Nations Elected Council (SNEC) to host nightly gospel music events from July 2-9 in an effort to bring the community together.

The property is located at 1573 Tuscarora Rd. and used to be the residence of The Salvation Army but now stands as a vacant lot.

Arlene Martin, executive director for SNCYO, told council during the June 19 meeting that she was aware of the land being donated to the Six Nations community for church use. Martin said the group hopes to take advantage of that and hopes to bring more events like this to the location in the future, adding that local artists will be performing during the week long event.

Jace Martin, local Six Nations musician and member of the SNCYO, says he's hoping this event can bring the community together, and give people a chance to enjoy the live music.

"We are wanting to plan a nightly musical event for the community and to welcome the community to that property. We'll be setting up a nice tent outside and having music nightly from July 2 to July 9 starting at 7 p.m.," he said. "We're going to have different nightly performers to come and celebrate and be together as a community for the week and we're hoping this is the first of hopefully many events in the future at that property."

Six Nations Chief Mark Hill showed his support for the event.

"It's always nice to get together as a community as much as we can, so I do appreciate the work you're doing in that nature."

Martin says volunteers will be in place to manage traffic control for each night and that SNCYO will inform Six Nations Police that the events are taking place.

SNEC granted SNCYO permission to use the property located at 1573 Tuscarora Rd. for the nightly events from July 2-9.
