The Six Nations Chiefs are back after their playing time was on pause over the past two years.
The COVID-19 pandemic put Major Series Lacrosse (MSL) on hold since its 2019 season. A dispute between some teams and the league also had some questioning whether this upcoming season would be put on hold due to that dispute. But MSL announced on June 18 that the season would proceed with four teams, with three other teams choosing to not take part. The Oakville Rock announced they would take a one-year sabbatical and the Owen Sound Lacrosse Club and Brampton Excelsiors did not resolve their disputes with major series lacrosse.
Six Nations Chiefs President and General Manager Duane Jacobs spoke on the league restart saying that the situation has improved.
“It’s certainly a better situation than it’s been the past two years. So our fingers are crossed that we are still able to come together and play the game in front of our community members," Jacobs said. "We're just hopeful the pandemic doesn't flare up and we hope that we’re on the other side of it and we can continue to come together and play the game and bring a lot of that positive energy to the community."
Despite the season being put on pause to begin the 2022 season Six Nations were able to host The Brooklin Lacrosse Club back in May for the Bread and Cheese game where they partnered with the Six Nations Jr A. Arrows to host a double header for the community.
“We look forward to being involved in that, on that particular day in the future,” Jacobs said.
The general manager also spoke about the team making a donation to a local Every Child Matters group; the team will be holding a special event to encourage fans to make their way out to see that presentation as well as enjoy the game.
The Chiefs kicked off the season this week with two wins and are back in action tonight at 8 p.m. against The Brooklin Lacrosse Club at Iroquois Park.
