IHR Télécom brings high speed internet to Brome Missisquoi

Some remote or rural Canadian regions have slow internet speed, or no internet access at all, and the Eastern Townships of Quebec is one of these regions. Deployment of the fibre optic cables and the introduction to IHR Télécom was discussed during recent November town council meetings.

The Government of Canada’s program Connecting Canadians, $225 million is being allocated to supply reliable internet to remote, rural, and northern regions of the country.

High speed internet will be offered to citizens through fibre optic cables and services provided by IHR Télécom. IHR Télécom owns the entirety of the network, but two companies will be subcontracted to complete the construction. To date, there is no public information available about the subcontractors involved in the project. It has been stated that there will be no inconvenience, or changes to current internet services, once the deployment has started because IHR Télécom operates on its own separate cables.

This service will be offered to all residents in Brome Missisquoi who currently do not have access to a cable or fibre optic network — residents who use a satellite, antenna, or dial up internet.

“Granting high speed internet access to the citizens of Brome Missisquoi has been a goal of mine since day one,” said Lyne Bessette, MP of Brome Missisquoi.

The duration of the project is three to five years. The region is divided into five phases, which can be seen in the chart below. Towns in Brome Missisquoi are at various stages of construction: Pike River (Phase 1) is already underway, Lac-Brome (Phase 4) will potentially break ground in spring of 2021, and Sutton (Phase 5) will not see any construction until late next year.
