The Centre Wellington (CW) Food Bank isn’t letting the COVID-19 pandemic slow them down.

Fred Aleksandrowicz, managing director at the CW Food Bank, said they are still helping as many people as they did this time last year.

He said the food bank is currently into food rescue.

“From the grocers in this community, I’m just going to give you one example, and that’s Walmart, simply because we get a lot from Walmart,” Aleksandrowicz said. “They would have thrown out 4,000 pounds of food on average, a week, and we get that every week just from Walmart. And it’s a variety of meats, of vegetable, fruits, canned products, breads, [and the list goes on].”

Aleksandrowicz said he hasn’t had to purchase milk or eggs for the CW Food Bank in roughly seven months.

He said people out there are thinking of others and he told The Grand 101.1 what really touches his heart.

“Is when somebody comes in here and I’ve never seen a donor, whether it’s a food item, whether it’s dollars, these are new donors, so they’re aware of what’s going on, and they’re caring, and they’re worried about others who may need or rely on, guess what, an extra helping hand,” Aleksandrowicz said.

He said that he’s seen an uptick in financial and food donations this year.

He also told The Grand 101.1 what the CW Food Bank just received, that will go a long way in helping out the organization.

“A brand new, ready for this, 2020 Dodge Ram 1500 refrigerated van, so I was able to successfully write a grant application, which I will brag about this, it’s the twelfth one in a row, $40,000 from the Walmart corporation. “

He added that the CW Food Bank received $18,000 for refrigerating the van from a couple of local families.
