Prince Edward County heard from telecom representatives on May 26 who spoke to rural cellular and high-speed internet availability in the county. Jim Pine of the Eastern Ontario Regional Network (EORN) was on hand at the Committee of the Whole meeting, providing an update on the Cell Gap Project which together with its partner Rogers Communications is seeking to build 256 new cell towers and upgrade approximately 300 sites to at least LTE standards by 2025.

The goal of the project is to achieve 99 per cent cellular coverage in its mandated area in Eastern Ontario. So far, the Prince Edward County government has contributed $236,219 to the over $300 million dollar project via the Eastern Ontario Wardens' Caucus. As well, representatives were present from Cogeco Connexion to provide an update on their broadband expansion projects for the County communities of Rednersville, Albury, and West Lake, which will connect 562 homes.
