The Pontiac candidate for the People’s Party of Canada, David Bruce Gottfred, spoke with CHIP 101.9 about his candidacy.

An engineer by trade, he describes himself as a “semi-retired” stay-at-home father and currently resides with his wife and two children in Chelsea.

He has previous political experience working on the 2006 and 2008 campaigns for Lawrence Cannon, the Conservative MP for Pontiac who served from 2006 to 2011.

He said he made the switch to the PPC because of his interest in economic policy and concern about the country’s debt load, and said that they were the only party that advocates “financial realism”. He also said that the increasing government restrictions had him “very concerned”.

The PPC advocates against COVID-19 restrictions and their leader, Maxime Bernier, has said that vaccination and masking should be a personal choice. Earlier this year, Bernier was both arrested and fined for participating in rallies that violated public health rules.

When asked about his priorities for the rural parts of the Pontiac, Gottfred said that while he didn’t have any specific policies for the region, he would help the area by reducing regulation and government intervention.

On the subject of supply management in Canada's dairy and poultry sectors, Gottfred was in favor of eliminating the current system in favour of a deregulated market.
