A new six-bed integrated stroke unit (ISU) will enable Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg to offer both acute and recovery care.

The Rose and Bob Avery Integrated Stroke Unit opened on Tuesday. The unit is named in memory of Rose and Bob Avery, which is made possible by a donation from the Gupta family, who operated several businesses in Port Hope, including the Comfort Inn where the Averys were longtime employees.

Bob was later a patient for an extended period of time at NHH after suffering a stroke and Rose was a frequent visitor, getting to know the staff and volunteers by name.

Support for the ISU is just one of the key projects identified within the NHH Foundation’s $25 million dollar Exceptional Community, Exceptional Care campaign.
