A new peer support group has been created to help those in recovery from addiction as a form of second stage treatment.

Serenity Seekers is a new drop in support group organized by members of the Gitlaxdax Nisga’a Terrace Society.

Angela Scodane, an outreach worker with the society says that having the support of people who may be experiencing similar feelings can help further recovery.

Scodane says that after a conversation with a client’s sister, they both thought it would be a good idea to start a program that can support people who are in all stages of their sobriety. Having a support system who understands the process is something Scodane says can help with the harder days of sobriety.

"People don't have those family members or friends where they could turn to and just release themselves and talk about what they're actually going through," Scodane says.

"It's our first trial run to see where and how we can go about to make it stronger," Scodane said about the possibility of doing drumming and smudging sessions in the future to add a traditional healing element.

The first Serenity Seekers will be held on Jan. 25 from 6-8 p.m. at the Gitlaxdax Nisga’a Terrace Society office, after that, they will gather every second Wednesday.
