New projects being funded by the Northern Healthy Communities Fund will aim to improve resident’s lives amidst rapid economic growth, according to Minister of Municipal Affairs and Stikine MLA Nathan Cullen.

Through the Northern Development Initiative Trust, communities around the Coastal Gaslink and LNG Pipeline projects have the opportunity to increase capacity for their local services and expand or improve their existing facilities.

These fourteen projects will divide $1.3 million as part of the fifth and sixth intakes which mostly consist of filling positions that will bring more accessibility to services like mental health care, emergency services, and childcare. Six of these projects will benefit communities within the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine, Cullen said.

Terrace’s Ksan Society will receive funding to hire a full time mental health support coordinator, and the District of Kitimat will have a full time position and accompanying program to collaborate with the Haisla Nation to address issues like homelessness, food security, and community safety. Since the start of this program, 46 projects have launched with a total of $5 million.

Applications for the next intake are now open, and projects will continue to be announced quarterly until 2026.
