The City of Nelson experienced their first town square event on Sunday. Roughly three to four hundred people showed up throughout the day.
Organized but the Nelson Sunday Town Square Committee (part of "Nelson at its Best"), the event was a trial run at what a town square could look like in Nelson. The 500 block of Baker Street was closed off from vehicles from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m, allowing people to enjoy this public space in a different way. There were no vendors, it was simply an opportunity for people to engage with each other and this area of the city.
It was originally scheduled for August but was postponed due to smoke.
George Chandler, head of the committee, said in a press release, “town squares are the traditional heart of a city, and for centuries have been an integral part of human settlements and play a significant role in enhancing community life.”
Kootenay Co-Op Radio’s Kim Bater was at the event speaking with residents, including Mayor Janice Morrison and Senior Planner with the City of Nelson Natalie Andrijancic.
There currently are no plans to make it a permanent fixture.
