A  skatepark that was repainted by Nakusp Secondary School was vandalized this week.

Students from a Nakusp Secondary social justice class initiated a project last month to re-paint the local skatepark. Rather than just paint it over, they chose to create meaningful artworks about social causes on the skatepark, according to the students, including climate change, mental health awareness and clean water on reserves.

But it was covered with racist graffiti, and now someone has also painted over several of the artworks with black spray paint.

Principal Peter Gajda says they’re “going to find a way for kids to have an opportunity to re-do it and do more public art.” Gajda and one of the students, Brody Raskob, joined CJLY to discuss the project.
