The Cortes Community Housing Society received two properties by anonymous donation this summer.
Executive Director Sandra Wood said they were to be sold under the condition that they were used to create affordable housing options. She added that the nearly one-acre parcel in the Mansons Landing area has a potential buyer, while the 80 acre property in the Whaletown area is still for sale.
Wood says there are no quick solutions to address Cortes Island's affordable housing crisis. She encourages groups and individuals to come up with creative housing ideas, such as the construction of a tiny home park, or pooling resources to create co-housing or cooperative housing initiatives.
Meantime, Wood is hopeful that construction will begin next year on the society's 24 rental town homes on its 51 acre Rainbow Ridge property in Mansons Landing. However, she adds that units won't be habitable until at least 2024.
