The 2024 Juno Awards are heading to Halifax.
Allan Reid, president and CEO of the Junos, announced Tuesday morning that singer and 10 time Juno award winner, Nelly Furtado will be hosting the 53rd annual award show that will take place on March 24, 2024. It will be the second time Furtado hosts the event after the 2007 Junos in Saskatoon.
“This is such an opportunity for Nova Scotia musicians to be part of this, to bring some excitement to it,” Premier Tim Houston said.
The Junos also announced that hip-hop trailblazer Maestro Fresh Wes will be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, becoming the first rapper to receive this achievement.
“I will be the fourth Black artist ever inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame,” Maestro Fresh Wes said. “This is monumental.”
The humanitarian award will go to Calgary born sisters Tegan and Sara for their advocacy work supporting the LGBTQ+ community and will be presented to them by Halifax native Elliot Page.
Furtado, Maestro Fresh Wes along with Toronto rock group the Beaches and Montreal singer Charlotte Cardin are the first round of Juno performers to be announced. The Juno Awards charity MusiCounts will be receiving $1 from every ticket sold to go towards musical instruments and equipment for schools across the country.
“We put over $950,000 worth of instruments and gear and resources into the provinces, schools and communities and $250,000 of that right here in the Halifax region,” Reid said.
