While Feb. 14 typically is a day to celebrate romantic love, CICK looked at how Smithers was celebrating local love.
This Valentine's Day, four community organizations are on the news talking about how community members to share the love with their organizations. Annette Morgan, the executive director of the Dze L'Kant Friendship Centre in Smithers, told CICK about their community fridge program.
"People can drop by during office hours of 8:30 to 4:30 Monday to Friday to donate food items to our community fridge. It's open to anyone who needs to use it, plus you can meet our amazing staff."
Lara Niessen, Manager of the Bulkley Valley Salvation Army let people know about school lunches.
"There are a number of families in the Bulkley Valley who simply can't pack a full lunch for their children in school. Donate granola bars, fruit snacks and other lunchtime snacks to fill our school hampers."
The Northwest Animal Shelter hosted a Kissing Booth and drop-in at Total Pet in Smithers on the weekend as a way to drum up awareness for their many cats and dogs looking for their forever home. Sarah Tomlinson, the director of the NWAS wanted listeners to understand that their shelter is full of animals who want to go home with the right person (as well as to spay and neuter your pets!)
And, lastly, the Grendel Group is a community charity that provides education and programming for people in the Bulkley Valley who have experienced cognitive or physical disabilities. Anyone can donate to their organization, which goes toward their food and education programs that run all year.
