The Halifax Regional Municipality has opened applications for the Neighbourhood Seed Kit Initiative, a new program that encourages residents to build relationships with their neighbours through gardening.
Kate Moon, community developer at Halifax's Parks and Recreation, said this would be a good opportunity for neighbours to share an activity with one another.
"We have five different vegetable seeds that folks can get. It's all free. We need at least two people from the neighborhood that are signing up to apply together. We are looking for information on how those folks plan to invite the rest of their neighborhood to participate in growing the food because it's an exciting process," she said.
Each kit also contains up to 30 food seed packages. Moon said the seeds are easy to grow and include kale seeds, basil, Swiss chard, beans, and zucchini.
With the price of food going up, she also said it's a bonus getting more community members interested in gardening.
"I think there's a strong connection to people connecting and communities themselves being more sustainable when people are more connected. Whether that's by growing their own food, or just sharing information with one another, building relationships," said Moon.
The municipality is accepting applications until March 31. Applications for the Neighbourhood Seed Kit Initiative are available on their website and will be distributed to residents in April.
