A trailer fire claimed the life of a 10-year-old child from Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation (MCFN) early this morning.

Six Nations Fire and Emergency Services responded to the structure fire just before 2 a.m. at a MCFN address on Mississauga Road in the area of Chiefswood Road. Ontario Provincial Police - Haldimand County Detachment (OPP) and the Haldimand County Fire Department were also on scene to assist in putting out the fire.

OPP Acting Sgt. Ed Sanchuk says when firefighters arrived, they were met with a fully engulfed camping trailer. He said six other individuals were able to escape the fire with minor injuries including two adults and four children. The victims are being assisted by Victim Services of Haldimand Norfolk and New Credit.

Sanchuk spoke on the tragedy and sent condolences to the victims, family and friends, and the MCFN community as they grieve this loss.

"I just want to put out my sincere and deepest condolences to everyone that's been affected by this tragedy. The family members, the friends, to the victims involved in this incident and to the community for your loss. You are in our thoughts and prayers as we deal with tragedy," Sanchuck said.

Haldimand Norfolk OPP crime unit, the Office of the Fire Marshall, as well as the Office of the Chief Coroner and Ontario Forensic Pathology Services will continue to investigate the incident and further updates will be provided as information becomes available.
