Hazel McCallion, the former Mayor of Mississauga, died on Jan. 29 at the age of 101.

McCallion was the longest serving mayor of the City of Mississauga from 1978 to 2014. The Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation (MCFN) released a statement acknowledging the passing of the community's "long time friend."

"The Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation Chief and Council are saddened to learn of the passing of Hazel McCallion, a long-time friend of the First Nation, who served as Mayor of the City of Mississauga for an astonishing 36 years," the Jan.29 statement reads.

McCallion was the signatory of two friendship treaties with the MCFN over her three decades as mayor.

In September 1979, she signed the Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Co-operation, followed by the Friendship Treaty, signed in April 2005.

McCallion had formed relationships with many of the chiefs, councils and community members over the years and will be remembered as a respected leader who recognized the traditional land on which the City of Mississauga lies.
