Kitimat hosted the the Grand Opening of the New Haisla Bridge on Saturday after two years of work.

Hereditary chiefs and members from Kitimaat village shared a blessing, song and drumming as the bridge and artwork were unveiled to the public.

Kitimat Mayor Phil Germuth and Skeena MLA Ellis Ross spoke at the event. One of the two Haisla artists Paul Windsor spoke on the symbolism of the bridge and the act of bridging generation gaps. He also on the importance of rebuilding and relearning the Haisla language and culture and walking better paths in life.

The Haisla Braid drum and dance group wrapped up the speeches by singing and drumming. Lunch was also provided as well as shuttle services for everyone in attendance.

The bridge will be open for public use by mid-July as a one lane bridge between the old and new bridges while the infrastructure is added. The 69-year-old bridge will begin deconstruction once the new bridge is fully opened and completely down by December 2023.
