Town of Brome Lake has announced a new bylaw to stimulate the economy.

This type of bylaw is usually adopted by towns and cities with large industrial sectors: Brome Lake does not have an industrial sector, but rather a handful of local commerce.

“A bylaw that aims to stimulate the economic development of Town of Brome Lake,” said Gilbert Arel, director general of Brome Lake.

There has been motivation to grow the economy of Brome Lake for a few years. It is proposed that this bylaw will help by offering incentives to local businesses.

“One is financial assistance for the industrial sectors, the second one is financial assistance to owners of commercial buildings in commercial and industrial sectors who would like to embellish their façade of their buildings,” explained Arel.

Town officials would like commerce and business in town to be more interesting and welcoming to new investors. In a way, this new bylaw is also a move to bring more permanent year-round business and tourism to downtown Knowlton, specifically. But the town is also trying to target the agi-food and restaurant industries, according to officials.

After a year and a half of development, the bylaw will provide some hope and relief for businesses coping with the pandemic. Some businesses have voiced that they need any help they can get.

The economic stimulation bylaw has not yet been adopted, but the Town of Brome Lake hopes to do so in the near future.
