The application deadline for Six Nations community members who formerly attended Indian Day Schools in Canada and qualify for the Indian Day School Class Action Settlement has now been extended.
The previous deadline was set for July 13, 2022, but it was anticipated that some people would miss the claims deadline according to the federal Indian Day School class action settlement's website. The new deadline for community members looking to apply in the settlement now have until Jan. 13, 2023 and an extension request form must be included with an application.
Six Nations Chief Mark Hill spoke on the application process being extended and also touched on the issue of previous day school applicants possibly being able to re-submit for different level claims.
"We're still very much in conversations and doing advocacy. We may have to go to a legal route at this point to see in terms of the Indian Day School process and how it took place itself in it's entirety," Hill said." Again, we know and recognize there's been say, for example, level one [applicants] who have received that and feel that they could've went for more, or were rather pressured into even only just settling for a level one. So those are some of the instances that were looking to continue to fight against."
According to the Indian Day School settlement website, claimants have 120 days from the time they receive the Claims Administrator’s notice to request a reconsideration of the assessed level.
If you would like to request a reconsideration of a lower level assessment, it is highly recommended to reach out to Class Counsel for assistance at 1(844) 539-3815.
