The 124th annual Christmas bird count will be taking place across the world this month including on Amherst Island.

The regular meet-up spot for participants on the island has moved to St. Paul's church this year.

The Christmas bird count began in 1900 and is North America's longest-running wildlife census. This year's counts will run from Dec. 14, 2023 to Jan. 5, 2024. Ontario Nature, and Birds Canada both have lists of bird counts happening this year. Scientists use the data collected to monitor the health and status of resident and migratory birds over time. This helps develop conservation strategies for species in decline and their habitats.

Bird lovers of all ages and skill levels are invited each year to participate by joining one of the many counts happening across the province.

CJAI spoke with local birder and compiler for Amherst Island's Christmas bird count, Janet Scott, as well as Lesley Rudy, Nature Network Organizer for Ontario Nature.
