The Guelph-Wellington Community Health Van will continue to serve Wellington County residents at least until next winter.
County staff are doling over $90,000 towards the van that David Anderson, chair of the social services committee says has extreme value to the community.
Anderson says several types of medical staff on board the van cover a broad range of areas within the county.
"It gets out to the rural areas - there's a lot of people in Wellington County that don't have a chance to get to the hospitals," Anderson said.
"There's clinicians, mental health clinicians, doctors. There's a nurse practitioner that comes with them, so they can actually bring medical service to the people right on the street," he went on.
Per the Town of Minto website, the van "makes stops in Guelph and Rural Wellington providing harm reduction supplies, food & hygiene products, first aid supplies and clothing (occasionally)."
Anderson explained the dollar amount is enough to keep the van moving for around a year.
The City of Guelph, he says, is relying on federal funding that's set to expire in the coming months.
"They currently have that federal funding that is valid until the end of March. Our $90,000 is going to cover from April to the end of December and then we'll make a decision. We've made a recommendation in our ten-year plan to continue funding that," Anderson stated.
He reiterated just how important the van is, and how it "meets the needs of the community."
