Corner Brook city hall is looking to create more awareness about water conservation due to increasing costs of treatment chemicals.
The issue was brought up during this week’s council meeting; Mayor Jim Parsons says the cost of chemicals to treat water is going up by 40 percent.
“We did approve a multi-year purchase of chemicals to treat water so every litre of water we save money,” he says. “In past budgets, we approved leak detection but we will have to do so more public awareness of water usage to try and get that down.”
Coun. Charles Pender says the city is lucky that there’s only been one water main leak.
“Leak detection is working and we’ve only had one,” he says. “Those leaks can spill a lot of water into the ground.”
Meanwhile, the city’s water demand decreased in September.
