As the entire region of L’estrie moves into Zone Red, the highest level of COVID-19 alert, it includes the Town of Sutton. Sutton is situated at the base of a mountain which makes it popular for snow sports and hiking. There is currently one confirmed case in the small town.

“We currently have at least one active case of COVID-19 in the Town of Sutton. It is very important this does not spread in our community," said Michel Lafrance, Mayor of Sutton.

Since the beginning of the pandemic in March, Sutton has seen approximately eleven cases of the virus. In the entire region of L’estrie there are currently 605 active cases of COVID-19.

“It is more important now than ever to respect the rules and regulations as they are further tightened,” said Lafrance, “I salute the citizens efforts.”

The new rules and regulations were put into effect on Friday, Nov. 13. The new stricter rules include:

  • No public or private gatherings
  • No visitors at residences
  • No group activities (must be solo or in pairs sports activities only)
  • Bars, gyms/fitness centres, theatres are closed

Businesses and community organizations in Sutton are still open and running. Town hall is closed to the public but all departments are still operating and accepting phone calls from the public. The public library lending desk is open and operating at reduced hours.

As a whole, the province of Quebec is debating shutting down schools until after the winter holidays to help minimize the spread of the virus mentioned Premier Legault at a press conference.
