Two First Nations doctors, Dr. Lana Potts and Dr. James Makokis, will be travelling to a few spots offering vaccinations during VaxxFest, an initiative to help boost COVID-19 vaccination rates amongst Indigenous youth.
The doctos will be at Whitefish Lake First Nation Nov. 26, Loon River First Nation on Nov. 28 and Nov. 30 at Peerless Trout First Nation for VaxxFest. Youth can drop in from 1-7 p.m. each day and first, second and even third doses will be available.
The safe environment offers live music and there are hourly draws for prizes.
Makokis and his husband Anthony Johnson were on season seven of Amazing Race Canada and will be present for some VaxxFest events. Youth can get their photo taken with Makokis and ask him questions about the vaccine.
“Having an Indigenous physician onsite really makes a big difference because we know that our people are more comfortable, you know, with other Indigenous health professionals. They may have had poor experience within the healthcare system. And so we’re able to answer their questions in a way that makes sense to them," he said.
More VaxxFests are being planned, so watch the Power of 100 website or Facebook page for coming events.
