The Whaletown Community Club (WCC) is hosting a Pride Party at the Gorge Hall on July 8. This is the first Pride event hosted in Whaletown since June 2019, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Shaun Canaday has recently taken on the role of the "social convener" for the WCC.
“I was having a conversation with a friend on the island and they mentioned how important it is that we do things for the LGBT community, which I'm very excited to help with, so I decided that’s my first event,” Canaday shares.
The doors open at 7 p.m. and there will be four DJs on the lineup including Bedtime Snack, Johnny Wafflez, Pom Poko, and RichGaud. Between DJ sets, there will be an "impromptu" talent show. Anyone interested in doing an act is encouraged to come prepared with everything required for their talent, including music, a sound system and props. There will be prizes involved with the talent show.
“We’re also encouraging people to dress their best!” Canaday said, adding that there will be prizes for best drag and most lavishly dressed.
This event is recommended for adults only, but all are welcome. Some talent show acts may contain adult content. There is a suggested donation for admissions of $10. Anyone interested in volunteering for the event is encouraged to contact Shaun at savnanaimo@gmail.com.
