On November 20th, the Whaletown Community Club (WCC) held their Annual General Meeting, marking 80 years of community spirit. The goals and aims of the WCC have not changed, as they continue to meet the needs of the community. Gabriel Dinim has been the volunteer president of the club for 3 years. He notes the timelessness of the principals driving the organization,

“Cortes residents seem to have the same social needs and the same social desires and the same desire to express themselves- and I find that quite remarkable that we really are still the same.”

According to Dinim, construction of the Gorge Hall began in 1932 and the constitution for the WCC was developed by 1942. The hall has served as the main venue to support all the programming that the WCC offers. Just this year, the club hosted several live music events, markets, weekly programming, holiday celebrations, and private gatherings. New to 2022, is games night-happening at 4 pm every Thursday.

The club has always been run by dedicated volunteers, with a sustainable rotation of human energy. The president celebrated,

“Every year there's a new board, not always a completely new board, but whoever comes on will offer the same service and provide the same level of dedication and care to the community. Which you can see reflected in all of the events that we offer”.
