The IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer's will be held this weekend with Kitchener Guelph and Mount Forest playing host to the event.

The walk aims to raise $100,000 for Alzheimer’s Society of Waterloo Wellington.

Larry Lutgendorff, fund director for the society, says dementia is becoming a massive issue across the country but also local to Centre-Wellington.

“Dementia is a growing epidemic in Canada. There’s over 600,000 people that have a diagnosis. That translates to in our region about 16,500 people. In the next 25, years we expect that number to triple.”

As of now, approximately $75,000 of a target $100,000 has been raised. In Mount Forest, the walk will be at Wellington Park and at Exhibition Park in Guelph.

Lutgendorff is hoping for a good turnout of 500 people as the money raised is crucial to the society's operations and the wellbeing of those who deal with Alzheimer's.

“The money that we raise stays here locally. It goes to programs that are really important to people who suffer from Alzheimer’s,” he said.

“Minds in motion is a social activity as well as an exercise and health regiment that helps people with Alzheimer’s slow the spread of the disease,” Lutgendorff concluded.

The walk will be held locally on Saturday, May 27. Those looking to join the walk or donate can head to the society website.
