Only two and a half years old, Vancouver’s proudly Asian drag family House of Rice has grown from humble beginnings to its current 11 members.

The drag family’s House Mother, or leader of the group, Shay Dior, is delighted to see Asian drag performers feel like they belong in the city’s drag scene.

“My biggest intent with the house is to try and teach what I felt like I had to learn on my own… to my drag children,” said Dior. “I just want to be able to provide these opportunities for these queer Asian performers to be an inspiration to other queer Asian people in the community because there’s not a lot of us out there.”

“The more queer Asian representation there is out there, the more Asian drag artists to showcase that it’s ok to explore and express your gender in different ways, I think that’s the goal.”
