A second suspect has been arrested in relation to gun shots fired at Cobourg’s west beach on Aug. 16, in the area where an encampment was set up.

Police said at the time there were no injuries reported.

Alearen Stewart, 18, of Ajax was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with pointing a firearm, discharge firearm with intent, attempted murder using firearm, knowledge of unauthorized possession of firearm, possession of loaded firearm, possession of a prohibited firearm and occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm. 

Stewart was held for a bail hearing. Last week, police arrested and charged 19-year-old Kersi Buakasa including attempted murder using a firearm.

The remaining outstanding suspect is 21-year-old Elijah Kerridge-Lall of the Durham region, described as 5 foot 8 eight inches and 130 pounds. He is on a current court release for attempted murder charges involving a firearm and was supposed to be on a house arrest condition but was not at his residence when police executed the search warrant.

Cobourg Police Chief Paul VandeGraaf told Northumberland 897 he credits different levels of governments, the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, Police Association of Ontario as well as the Toronto and Ontario Provincial Police associations for joining together in an attempt to make changes to the bail system as it relates to suspects of violent crimes getting released.

“Here’s another example where we have somebody who is on house arrest conditions, for I believe a violent offence, and is not even in their house, they’re not even in their municipality - they’re down the highway 40 minutes and are involved in gun activity in our community.”

Anyone who sees Kerridge-Lall is asked to contact police immediately.
