A young Prince George couple have walked their way across Canada along Highway 1 over the last 5 months and now they are walking a local route.

From May 3 to Oct. 2, Cameron and Charity West walked from Alberta to Newfoundland and drove back. After a few days off at home in Prince George, they made their way to Prince Rupert and attended the totem pole raising of the memorial pole for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two Spirit People (MMIW+2S).

Now, starting Oct. 21, the couple will be walking Highway 16, also known as "the Highway of Tears," from Prince Rupert to Prince George for two weeks, along with Cameron’s cousin Gary who joined up with the couple in Prince Rupert.

In their words, the are walking it to get back to grassroots and to raise awareness about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two Spirit People.

The journey is not funded by any sponsor, or any company or business. It's simply something that they decided to do on their own.

CFNR caught up with the trio along Highway 16 between Prince Rupert and Terrace.
