Six Nations Public Library is partnering with Neighborhood Forest to bring the "Trees for Kids" program to the community.

The program offers trees free of charge to any children who register with the program. Six Nations Public Library says it's goal is to "promote stewardship within the community by letting the children experience the magic and wonder of planting and then watching these trees grow."

Feather Maracle, CEO and director of Library Services for Six Nations Public Library, talked about the program and her hopes to see youth on Six Nations further develop a relationship with the environment.

"The children will be able to develop and nurture their relationship with our environment through this program."

"One large tree provides the oxygen for up to four people. So, the opportunity for literally planting life, and seeing a tree last far beyond the person who planted it, the children and community will be able to see and experience the benefit for our health, as well as the health of our environment," she added.

Maracle said the program is being promoted to Six Nations youth and the goal is to get them engaged on environmental health for future generations.

"I think that there's no better opportunity to learn about our environment and about how our world around us works and to establish that relationship with nature and our connection to the land than actually planting life," she said.

"We experience it everyday and we don't think about how the air that we breathe is provided to us from the trees and that the air that we exhale is what the trees need to sustain themselves, so it's really a unique relationship," she added.

One tree will be provided to each child registered. The registration deadline is Feb. 28.

To learn more, visit the Six Nations Public Library's Facebook page, the Six Nations Public Library website, the Neighborhood Forest's website, or by calling directly into the Six Nations Public Library at (519) 445-2954. Trees will be delivered to Six Nations Public Library before or on Earth Day.
