The Four Nations Arena in Maskwacis will be hosting a special fundraiser hockey game on Friday.

All funds raised through the event go towards scholarship funds at the Maskwacis Cultural College to help Indigenous students pursue education.

Fran Ermineskin, Dean of Indigenous Education at the Maskwacis Cultural College, said that the community needs "something to look forward to," and wants youth to be excited for the future.

The two teams playing in the March 31 game will feature a lot of guests, Ermineskin says. The first team, "The Chiefs," will feature several chiefs from Treaty 6 and 7. Ermineskin is still working on having chiefs from Treaty 8 come to the game, but she says there are some conflicts. The second team, which will be made of anyone else who registered to play, was jokingly named "The Other Guys" by Ermineskin and her committee.

The event was put together in four weeks and most of the preparation was done virtually, Ermineskin said, and there was help from the Confederacy of Treaty 6, with the organization helping raise awareness about the event and sponsoring jerseys for the game to help get it off the ground.

More information on the game can be found on the Maskwacis Cultural College’s website.
