The B.C. government announced on Tuesday that the restriction on non-essential travel for the purpose of staying in temporary accommodation in six interior communities would lift on Wednesday, August 23.

The restriction for West Kelowna remains in place. That means no travelling to that community to stay in temporary accommodation for non-essential reasons. Highway One between chase and Sorrento remains closed.

A press release from the provincial government dated August 24th stated that thousands of rooms in Vernon, Penticton, Kamloops, Oliver and Osoyoos, Kelowna and West Kelowna were available to evacuees and fire fighters as a result of the restriction, which was put in place on Saturday, August 19.

They also repeated the advice to make travel decisions with the current conditions in mind. "If you are planning on travelling in B.C., please do so safely and avoid fire-affected communities. Know before you go and be prepared. Many communities continue to be impacted by wildfires and continue to face challenges. Listen to the direction of local communities. Respect emergency orders and alerts. While many communities in the Interior are looking forward to welcoming people, others, like Lake Country and the Shuswap, are advising that now is not a good time to visit." It said in the release.
