Loyalist Township could see its first disc golf course in the area.

To test public interest, the recreation department has set up a demonstration by Limestone City Disc Golf Club at a free event this week where community members will get a chance to see the game in action.

Disc golf is a variation of regular golf with a disc instead of a ball, no clubs, and an above-ground target instead of a hole. The goal is to throw the disc and hit the target in as few shots as possible.

Bringing disc golf to the township would mean the installation of a fully-functioning course, and finding the space to do so. If there is a notable level of interest from the public, the recreation department will look towards the next steps of bringing it forward to council.

Recreational Programming Coordinator Susan McNeill notes the department's commitment to bettering the programming for residents.

"We're trying bring out some new, fun ways for the community to learn; to stay active, for all ages." said McNeill.

This would fall in line with the recreation departments expanding programming and events, but the possibility of a disc golf course, or any new sports court within the township, could mean some extensive planning.

Updates on disc golf in the township will eventually arise after thorough staff discussion following the free public event this week. The event will be held between 5-7 p.m. at the WIllie Pratt Sports Field in Amherstview.
