Loyalist Township have passed a new by-law to appoint livestock valuers who investigate local claims about animal predation.

The bylaw is in accordance with the Ontario Wildlife Damage Compensation Program and the Protection of Livestock and Poultry from Dogs Act. Both the program and the act require the council of every local municipality to appoint livestock valuers this year.

Livestock valuers are responsible for investigating predation claims and creating reports with evidence. This involves any injury, death or stalking of local livestock by wildlife in the area. The reports are submitted to the municipality for submission to Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. The township now has a total of six livestock valuators to ensure reports are completed within the prescribed timelines.
