Toronto’s city clerk confirms that the next mayoral byelection will be on June 26.
The news comes after deputy mayor Jennifer McKelvie told a local news station that an election would not happen before June. For now, McKelvie will assume mayoral duties until a successor is elected.
During former Toronto mayor John Tory’s final address on Feb. 17 to the public, McKelvie said she does not intend to run for mayor.
"Residents can rest assured that my entire at this time is a smooth transition and continued good governance," she said. "As I said yesterday, I will not be seeking to run for mayor in the upcoming byelection."
Nominations for mayoral candidates open on April 3 at 8:30AM and close on May 12 at 2PM.
Advance polling will take place from June 8 to 13.
In addition to polls across the city, residents will have the open to cast their vote by mail.
The estimated budget for the byelection is approximately $13 million. This is down by $1.5 million, when $14.5 million was spent on the Toronto municipal election in October 2022.
The byelection was scheduled after John Tory’s surprising resignation on Feb. 10 after admitting to an affair with a former staffer that began during the height of COVID-19. Tory said it was consensual and ended in early 2023. News of the affair was first reported by the Toronto Star, and Tory confirmed it during a press conference later in the evening.
