Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) provided an update on its upcoming medical school. On March 7, the university announced that the senate board has approved its expansion and construction can begin at the Brampton campus. 

This week, the university announced that the medical school will be officially open for September 2025. 

In the March 7 press release, the university outlined a guide for a letter of intent for prospective applicants, as well as the school’s aim to" help address the current shortage of primary care physicians who are unevenly distributed across communities throughout the province." 

"This is a significant milestone in our efforts to deliver a new approach to medical education that will address the changing needs for health care delivery and practice," interim provost and vice-president Roberta Iannacito-Provenzano writes in the press release.

The school be located at the Brampton Civic Centre and be in the vicinity of its hospitals: Brampton Civic and Peel Memorial. 

About $20 million in funding will come from the Ontario government for the 250,000 square foot campus expansion. 

The plans for the school were initially announced at an event in late January this year. Vice-co chair Mohamed Lachemi, Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Brampton mayor Patrick Brown were among the speakers. 

CJRU reached out to Lachemi for comment on the board approval, and are awaiting a reply.
