Toronto has a new opera: Canoe is a new two-act opera that aims to defy conventions in the genre.

Unsettled Scores co-founders and composers Spy Dénommé-Welch and Catherine Magowan say they have explored medium of opera to tell the captivating tale of two sisters from Northern Ontario, their ancestral tree, and old but familiar visitors in the new opera. They add that they aim to break Eurocentric operatic structures, redesigning a safe space for diverse audiences to experience the transformative power of Indigenous storytelling and opera.
