The Town of Sutton announces compliance to the Union of Quebec Municipalities (UQM) campaign supporting respect within democracy.

The UQM represents municipalities of all sizes throughout the province. Approximately 85 per cent of the province’s population is represented by the UQM.

“Respect in Democracy is Respecting Democracy,” the motto adopted by the Sutton Council in commitment to the national campaign by the UQM.

During the last year there have been some instances where the ideals of democracy were questioned. This allowed some people to question the meaning and purpose of a democratic system.

In order to instill trust within the municipal government of Sutton, ahead of the Nov 7 elections, the town would like to publicly address their support of the fundamental values of democracy.

“Bullying, threats, and verbal violence have no place in a democracy and do not promote the trust and recognition that the population has in its democratic institutions,” stated Dominique Parent, Town of Sutton Councillor.

Respect is fundamental for the proper operation of a democracy. The Town of Sutton would like to continue their efforts in building a strong and trusting democratic government for the citizens.

“With the municipal elections coming up in Quebec, it is important to demonstrate council members’ political commitment to encourage new candidates to run. It is also essential, in order to move forward collectively, to encourage all actors of democracy to behave with respect to one another: the citizens, the elected people who represent them and the staff of the administration that serves them,” explained Michel Lafrance, Mayor of Sutton.
