The Nova Scotia Talent Trust (NSTT) was selected as the recipient of a $10,000 donation from the 100+ Women Who Care Halifax on June 13.

The NSTT was nominated by a member of the 100+ Women Who Care Halifax along with Nourish Nova Scotia and Margret’s House (Feeding Others of Dartmouth Society).

Andrea Urquhart, the executive director at the NSTT says the funds will go to establishing new scholarships for emerging artists.

“All of our scholarships are open to any emerging artists,” Urquhart says, adding that the charity has helped artists from as young as 10-years-old to artists that are 64-years-old and there are no age restrictions.

The scholarships help emerging artists in Nova Scotia with anything needed to help them reach success, such as tuition for their studies, equipment or even travel expenses.

The NSTT started in 1944 to help artists of all avenues with any assistance they may need to reach their goals. The organization's first recipient was Portia White, Urquhart says. White, born in Truro, NS, was the first Black Canadian concert singer to win international acclaim. Her scholarship from NSTT helped to support White in her studies in New York.

Since then, they have assisted in helping over 1,000 Nova Scotians.
