With the first cement pour back in June 2021, the McMurray Métis Cultural Center’s construction is well underway.

McMuarry Métis President Peter Hanson says that it’s 40-50 percent complete, with the project slated to be finished by December 2023.

Hanson says that some of the amenities that will be inside the cultural center will include a gathering space that will seat up to 450 people, along with a teaching kitchen to learn how to cook traditional food.

Hanson hopes that this new building will bring Canadians from all over the country to Fort McMurray to see the Métis Cultural Center and learn and experience the culture.

The architects from Mindful Architecture Maginnis Cocivera and Genevieve Noel not only design, but also supervise the project. Noel says that she came up with the idea of the shape of the building as an infinity loop and calls it “Métis Rising.”
