One day when they were hanging out, Vancouver high school students Brandon Dai and Nickolas Zhang decided they wanted to help out in their city.

The two friends brought together over 30 students from high schools across Vancouver and Project Hastings was born. The student-led group has now organised a number of drop-offs of care packages and sandwiches in the Downtown Eastside.

The students said that prior to forming Project Hastings, they didn't know much about the neighbourhood. Now having met residents of the Downtown Eastside, they've learned that the residents are "very friendly, very kind."

The students say they understand that food donations may not solve systemic issues, but they hope to motivate other young people to contribute in whatever way they can.
